This led to Samsung delaying the launch of the Galaxy Fold smartphone ‘indefinitely’ so that it can make the necessary improvements. Samsung’s foldable smartphone that we saw this year had an in-folding design. However, some newly published patents make it look like the South Korean technology giant is now coming up with a foldable smartphone that has an out-folding design. These designs were applied for in the US in late 2018 and in Korea in December 2015. But then, the US patent was published only earlier this week. It has been said that Samsung is working on two more foldable smartphone variants. While one will be a vertically folding design that will be similar to a flip phone, the other will sport a clamshell-like design similar to Huawei Mate X. The vertical folding smartphone by Samsung will either be revealed late this year or early next year. The out-folding design will be announced later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r_UgNcJtzQ The patent that has been spotted at the United States Patent and Trademarks Office of the out-folding device shows a flexible display that is mounted on two cases and joined by a hinge using a sliding mechanism. When the device is folded, a slide covers the slide back towards the case and this enables the screen to be folded. The slide cover on the device helps the display of the smartphone to fold easily when it slides back. In the unfolded state it helps the device remain firm. A locking mechanism can also be seen in the patent drawings which is supposed to lock the sliding cover in place when the smartphone is unfolded. The patent was first spotted by Patently Mobile. Samsung Galaxy Fold is powered by a 7nm unnamed processor and sports a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Dynamic AMOLED panel when unfolded. When the smartphone is folded, the handset features a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED panel. The smartphone comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage and houses a 4,380mAh. The foldable smartphone comes with six cameras, among which three are placed on its back panel and two can be accessed only when the device is unfolded. The last among these is placed on the front which can only be seen when it is folded into a candy bar phone.
